On February 26, 2021, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Christine Elliott announced that the construction of a new hospital for Markdale has been approved, and will start this Monday. The province awarded a contract to Bird Construction to build the 68,000 square foot facility on Toronto Street South.

The Grey Bruce Health Unit wants to reassure the public that we continue to be dedicated to robust case and contact management of all cases and high risk contacts, including any case and contact management in workplaces. Several Health Units within Ontario have had to reduce or discontinue case and contact management due to the volume of cases. As a result, our health unit may not be receiving notification from other health units if an active case from another health unit had contact with residents from Grey and Bruce Counties.

A ninety-three year old resident of Maple View Long-Term Care Residence in Owen Sound is the first Grey County resident to receive the COVID-19 vaccination. Eleonore Kueber was given the first dose of the Pfizer BioNtech COVID-19 vaccine this morning by Public Health Nurse Lisa Lambkin. As that vaccine was being given, the first vaccine in Bruce County was also being administered to Nora Foster, a seventy-one year old resident at Golden Dawn Senior Citizen Home in Lion’s Head. Residents, staff and essential caregivers revived the vaccine. As well as Golden Dawn and Maple View, some vaccine was also administered at Georgian Heights Long-Term Care Centre in Owen Sound.

Grey County Economic Development and Planning staff have partnered with Jayne Armstrong, Dahab Ibrahim, Anne James, Catherine Jiao, and Nick Rhamey-Smith, students from University of Toronto Masters of Science in Planning program, to study downtown main streets in Grey County. More specifically the project looked at downtown revitalization and the possibility for additional residential units on main streets.

As the situation continues to evolve, the Grey Bruce Health Unit is pleased to share with you today that the Ministry of Health has approved the release of two initial shipments of the Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine to the Grey-Bruce region. The first of these shipments will be arriving the week of January 11, 2021, and the second shipment will be arriving the week of January 25, 2021. In total, the two shipments will contain approximately 1000 doses of vaccine.

TORONTO — As COVID-19 cases continue to rise at an alarming rate throughout the province, the Ontario government, in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health and other health experts, is extending certain measures to keep students, education staff, and residents of Northern Ontario safe. This includes extending in-person learning until January 25, 2021 for elementary school students in the 27 Southern Ontario public health unit regions and extending the shutdown in Northern Ontario for another 14 days, aligning with the shutdown period in Southern Ontario.

Public Health has recently investigated cases of COVID-19 associated with hockey teams. To ensure a safe return to hockey, the Ontario Hockey Federation and the province have provided guidance to prevent COVID-19 transmission. Public health works with teams to ensure safety of the team and the community. Public Health reminds hockey associations, parents, and players of the need to follow standard precautions, association guidelines and provincial law to reduce the risk of COVID-19.

Over the past five days, there have been at least five reported opioid overdoses within Grey and Bruce Counties. These included two fatalities, pending coroner confirmation, and several others of a critical nature. These incidents have occurred in Owen Sound as well as smaller rural centres. In one instance, the use Naloxone was unable to reverse the overdose.

On February 7, County Council recommended adoption of the 2020 budget. The budget supports continued delivery of high-quality services while adjusting to changes in Provincial funding and invests in valuable projects and important infrastructure. A County tax rate increase of 1.26% (or about $750,000 compared to 2019) is needed on a total budget of $157.5 million. This represents a $14.48 increase to the average household.
