Passing of Deputy Mayor Rob Potter

It is with great sadness that the Town of The Blue Mountains announces that Deputy Mayor Rob Potter passed away peacefully yesterday afternoon with his wife Linda and his family by his side.

“On behalf of Council, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to Linda and the entire Potter family,” said Mayor Alar Soever. “Rob was a valued member of Council and a true community leader. His presence will be missed throughout the community by friends, family and residents.”

Deputy Mayor Potter served as Councillor for the Town of The Blue Mountains from June 2018, until he was appointed as Deputy Mayor for the Town on January 30, 2020. His selfless dedication to the community was such that he remained active in his role as Deputy Mayor until late last week.

In his professional career, Deputy Mayor Potter was editor of the local Courier-Herald and the Review Herald newspapers for a period of 28 years. He also worked with the Town of The Blue Mountains as the Communications and Economic Development Coordinator from 2009 – 2010.

Community volunteer service was an integral part of his life, and the community would be a far lesser place if it were not for his contributions as the founding president of the Marsh Street Centre and a member of the steering committee that brought the Craigleith Heritage Depot to fruition. His volunteer work also extended to several Town committees, including the Community Assist for an Urban Study Effort (“CAUSE”) program committee, the Sustainable Path Committee and the Attainable Housing Committee in its early years. He was also involved with the Thornbury Community Theatre Group, Relay for Life and many other local community organizations.

Flags at Town Hall have been lowered to honour the passing and legacy of Deputy Mayor Potter, and the Committee of the Whole and Council meetings scheduled for this week have been postponed. A book of condolences will be available in the Town Hall atrium, starting at noon on Monday. In lieu of flowers, Rob and Linda have requested donations be made to the Marsh Street Centre. Further details regarding arrangements will be released when available.
