“The dance is a great thing,
A great thing to me. With candles lit and partners fit For night-long revelry; And going home when day-dawning Peeps pale upon the lea: O dancing is a great thing, A great thing to me!” By Thomas Hardy |
Lorraine Sutton is well known as a dance enthusiast and teacher, http://www.countrydancecaller.ca. In the Fall of 2013 she introduced a number of people in the area to the joys of English Country dancing. The event was so well received that a Society was formed to enjoy this special form of dance. Society members come from Bruce/ Grey and Simcoe Counties to dance in Clarksburg. Lord Grey is entering its 7th season this October 6 2019.
Eventually we hope to expand and include other venues for our dances and this and other facts were taken into consideration when naming the Society. A unique name in keeping with locale, tradition, dress and imagination was needed. Thus, we chose the name Lord Grey as founder of our Society. English Country Dance is a form of folk dance which originated in England in the 17th century but also contains elements of the European court dances of that period. This European influence adds charm and elegance as the dancers move in time to the hauntingly beautiful melodies. Why dance?
